Sell/Buy/Date Panel Discussion
Sex trade survivor leaders Esperanza Fonseca, Gabrielle Prieto, and Melanie Thompson joined filmmaker Sarah Jones and moderator/Equality Model advocate Mitha Choudhury in a thoughtful dialogue of the harmful misconceptions about the sex trade and the cultural battles we face as we fight for true equality.

Last week, members of New Yorkers for the Equality Model hosted a roundtable discussion on trafficking for sexual exploitation in New York State and beyond. The discussion included advocate and philanthropist Chelsea Clinton, New Yorkers for the Equality Model member and Survivor Leader Melanie Thompson, OSCE's Special Representative and Coordinator for Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings Valiant Richey, and the co-sponsors of New York's Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act, Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter.

Visa and Mastercard have suspended card payments for advertising on Pornhub and its parent company MindGeek. This is a significant stride forward in holding websites accountable for hosting and sharing child sexual abuse materials and other nonconsensual videos.

Earlier this month, New York State Senator Liz Krueger spoke to Lynn's Warriors on WVOX Radio to discuss the dangerous and growing sex trade in our state. Just last year, Senator Krueger, along with Assemblymember Pamela Hunter, introduced a bipartisan piece of legislation, The Sex Trade Survivors Justice and Equality Act.

Response to John Oliver
Recently, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver aired a segment calling for the full decriminalization of the sex trade. Throughout the 25-minute piece, John Oliver minimized the harms and abuses inherent in the sex trade and dismissed it as a fact of life rather than a system of exploitation propped up by sexism, racism, and economic inequality.

This week, four years of incessant advocacy came to fruition when Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the START Act — legislation that will allow survivors of the sex trade to more completely shed the burden of a criminal record imposed as a result of their victimization.

NYC's DAs must act now: In a statement, our coalition of advocates and survivor leaders are calling on Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez and all other New York City DAs to develop and implement a comprehensive campaign to reduce demand for prostitution by targeting sex buyers, uphold the rule of law, refer victims to service agencies, and educate the public that sex buying is not a victimless crime.

April 2021 highlights
We support the recently announced decision by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office to stop prosecuting section 230.00 of the New York Penal Code — meaning they won't prosecute people in prostitution and ‘unlicensed practice of a profession’ cases as they relate to prostitution — and to dismiss 6,000 loitering and prostitution-related cases.
